Hannah Bases
University of Pennsylvania
Hannah Bases is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, double majoring in Political Science, with a concentration in International Relations, and East Asian Languages and Civilizations, with a concentration in Mandarin. She is a Perry World House Student Fellow, a Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society member, and is completing her Honors Thesis in Political Science. Hannah is excited to start the International Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies to learn more about the region, improve her language skills, and conduct quality, in-depth political communication research at NCCU.
Norbu Lhagyal
Jawaharlal Nehru University
Since August 2021 to Oct 2023, I have been serving as a Subject Matter Specialist in Mandarin and Tibetan Languages at the School of International Cooperation, Security, and Strategic Languages (SICSSL), Rashtriya Raksha University—a recognized Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. In this role, I instruct both regular students and government security personnel from the three defense sectors.
Before this position, from February 2020 to May 2021, I volunteered at Sera Jey Tsawa Khangtse Monastery in South India. During this time, I taught English, Maths, and Mandarin to young monks and provided support to the Tsawa Khangtsen Management Committee by writing proposals and funding letters to sponsors amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
I completed my schooling at the Tibetan Children’s Village Schools in India and graduated in Chinese Language and Cultural Studies from the School of Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, spanning 2015-2018. Additionally, I was an executive member of the JNU Tibet Forum.
My involvement extends to various leadership and youth development programs, including the Gurukul Program at His Holiness the Dalai Lama Temple in Dharamsala (July 2016) and the XIX Free Tibet! Action Camp (October 2017). Furthermore, I actively contributed to the Initiative of Change (IofC), serving as an organizer for the National Youth Conference, coordinating the Indian National Youth Conference, and volunteering in outreach efforts in Northeast India and Nepal.
Recognized as one of the 20 Initiative of Change scholars worldwide, I underwent leadership training on ‘Peace-building and Conflict Resolution’ organized by the Initiative of Change, US, from December 2017 to January 2018. I also received the kanthari scholarship, completing an intensive Leadership course in Trivandrum, Kerala, from March 2019 to February 2020. Equipped with skills and experiences to initiate and manage social initiatives, I actively participated in the 6th International Seminar of Young Tibetologists at the University of Virginia Charlottesville, USA, from August 1-5, 2022.
