IMAS is pleased to welcome back Julian Tash, a 2026–27 Fulbright U.S. Student Researcher and Ph.D. Candidate in History at the University of Pennsylvania.
Julian is an IMAS Class of 2021 alumnus and returns to IMAS as part of his Fulbright research. He
is a doctoral candidate in the department of History at the University of Pennsylvania specializing in the history of the Japanese Empire and Taiwan. He graduated from IMAS in 2021. His dissertation, which is currently titled Becoming Overseas Taiwanese: Taiwanese Identity and (Post)imperial Japan, examines how the development of Taiwanese identity in Japan between 1895-1972 intersected with and shaped Japanese ideas of human rights, democracy, and ethnicity in the Japanese empire and the post WWII Japanese state.
